Gregory Crewdson (*1962 in Brooklyn, New York) shows artfully condensed stories in his photographs that are essentially about the encroachment of the mysterious into normality. In one work from his series Twilight (1998-2002), for example, yellow school buses are parked in front of white wooden houses. Groups of students stand or lie motionless across the site. Idyllic only at first glance, the picture appears "uncanny" in the Freudian sense, showing something familiar but altered and inexplicable in a disturbing way. What exactly is happening here? To dramatize his disturbing suburban settings, Crewdson goes to great lengths that is otherwise only seen in Hollywood films. Using lighting, cranes, equipment and extras, he stages his visions with an obsession for detail, which are always an accurate depiction of everyday American life. This publication brings together all of the artist's photographic productions in one volume for the first time, including his most recent, previously unpublished series Beneath the Roses.
