Christo and Jeanne-Claude: In/Out Studio
Christo (1935–2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935–2009) have created some of the most breathtaking works of art of the 20th and 21st centuries. With their projects, they have radically questioned the traditional notion of painting, sculpture and architecture. The lavishly designed illustrated book is the first comprehensive publication on the artists' work to be published after Christo's death in May last year. It also marks the start of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's last major project - the wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, which will be realized posthumously in autumn 2021. The book brings together numerous, partly private photographs and studio shots from the years 1949 to 2020, allowing an intimate look behind the scenes of the monumental installations with which Christo and Jeanne-Claude have repeatedly amazed the public. Shots portraying the artists at work are supplemented by photographs of all important projects. Matthias Koddenberg (* 1984), art historian and close friend of the artists, has spent many years compiling the more than 300 photographs gathered here, including numerous photos of companions and friends as well as previously unpublished photographs from the artists' estate. This tells not only the extraordinary story of their artistic collaboration, but also that of their partnership that has lasted for five decades.
