Experiencing femininity – an exhibition about being, becoming and remembering
Galerie SCHLUH | Worpswede | May 16 – July 6, 2025
Femininity is not a state. It is a flux, a constant movement between worlds. It exists not as a fixed concept, but as an experience—lived, felt, often unconscious. It is present in art, in nature, in the memories of the women who came before us.
In this exhibition, Anna Schill , Julia Pugacheva , and Markus Lippeck explore the meaning of femininity. Their works are not answers, but narratives, fragments of a dialogue between past and future, between light and shadow, between conformity and self-determination.
Anna Schill's paintings explore the duality of existence. Symbols blend with realistic details to create a world that is simultaneously close and remote. Her texts, collected in the book "Between Two Worlds ," are reflections on femininity as a force that shapes without ever being grasped. Femininity appears here not as a role, but as a movement—as something that grows in silence, blossoms in contradictions, and manifests differently in each person.
In her art, Julia Pugacheva tells stories of women who walk between reality and dream. Her graphic works and artistic dolls are more than objects—they are beings that carry memories within them, fragments of beauty, pain, and transformation. Her art speaks of women as creators, as bearers of lived stories, as figures who cannot be forced into a single mold.
Markus Lippeck transforms the exhibition into a physical experience, connecting various art forms. His works blend collages, graphics, and photographs into multifaceted images that raise social and personal questions about femininity and identity. His textile installation, a giant "umbilical cord," runs through the entire space, connecting the works. The exhibition thus becomes a walk-in experience in which art, space, and viewer enter into a dialogue.
Why now? Why here?
Worpswede is celebrating Paula Modersohn-Becker this year – a woman who pushed boundaries in her art, who didn't settle for what was expected of her. This exhibition explores her spirit. What does it mean to be a woman today? What does it mean to understand femininity not as an ascription, but as a possibility?
This exhibition is not a homage to a particular image of women. It is an invitation to feel, to remember, to question. It is a journey into the essence of what connects us—in art, in life, in ourselves.
